Nestled at the foothills of the beautiful Rocky Mountains, Calgary is a city brimming with energy, culture, and adventure. Known for its iconic Calgary Stampede, thriving arts scene, and breathtaking natural landscapes, Calgary offers an array of experiences for visitors and locals alike. It’s also my home, which is why I’m excited to share the best things to do in Calgary with you.
From world-class festivals and restaurants to urban parks and trendy neighbourhoods, this is your guide to the best things to do in Calgary, Alberta.
1. Calgary Stampede: The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth
Every July, Calgary transforms into a cowboy paradise during the Calgary Stampede. This legendary event showcases thrilling rodeo competitions, heart-pounding chuckwagon races, live concerts, and a massive midway. It’s also known for an incredible array of tasty and unique food.
Located near downtown Calgary, this festival draws more than one million visitors over 10 days, making it an excellent time to see Calgary come alive.
So don your cowboy hat, eat some mini donuts, and immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere of this world-renowned celebration.
2. Calgary Zoo: A Global Safari in the Heart of the City
Embark on a wildlife adventure at the Calgary Zoo, which is home to over 1,000 animals and a large variety of plants from around the globe. Spread out over 127 acres, this is one of the largest and most respected zoos in Canada, offering a great educational experience for adults and kids alike.
The Calgary Zoo has many unique and amazing exhibits featuring all sorts of beautiful animals such as gorillas, giraffes, penguins, hippos, and even polar bears. They also have an area called the Land of Lemurs, Canada’s first immersive lemur experience. Visitors will get to witness first-hand these rare creatures from Madagascar, which are some of the cutest little creatures you’ll ever see. Engage with interactive exhibits, learn fascinating facts from passionate zookeepers, and even participate in unique behind-the-scenes experiences. Whether you’re a curious child or a lifelong learner, the Calgary Zoo promises a blend of education, conservation, and fun, making it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to connect with nature and discover the wild side of life.
In addition, the Calgary Zoo is a beautiful place to walk around and is conveniently located close to downtown Calgary and easily accessible via the LRT.
3. Heritage Park Historical Village: Step Back in Time
Another one of my favourite attractions in Calgary is Heritage Park Historical Village, Canada’s largest living history museum. Not only is it a beautiful place to walk around, but it’s also home to more than 180 exhibits and attractions, including vintage homes, shops, a vintage car museum, a working steam train, and even a historical paddle-wheeler that takes visitors out on scenic Glenmore Reservoir. You can even Interact with costumed interpreters, ride a horse-drawn wagon, and indulge in delicious food and treats. It truly is one of the best Calgary attractions.
Although the park is open year-round and hosts many themed holiday events, it’s best explored during the summer months when everything is open and available.
4. Glenbow Museum: Where Art and History Collide
Discover the rich tapestry of Alberta’s heritage at the Glenbow Museum, home to an extensive collection of art, artifacts, and archives. Explore exhibits that showcase Indigenous culture, Western Canadian history, and contemporary art from around the world. From ancient fossils to modern masterpieces, the Glenbow offers a fascinating journey through time.
However, please note that the Glenbow Museum is currently closed due to extensive renovations and will open as a completely new venue. Once complete, it will be called the JR Shaw Centre for Arts & Culture and will be free to explore.
5. Calgary Tower: Panoramic Views and Sky-high Thrills
Known as one of Calgary’s most iconic attractions, the Calgary Tower is a 190.8-metre free-standing observation tower., offering stunning views of Calgary and the nearby mountains, a glass floor, and the Sky 360 Restaurant and Lounge, which is one of the best restaurants in Calgary. While it’s no longer the tallest building in Calgary, it offers great value for what it offers and is conveniently located in the heart of downtown Calgary.
6. WinSport: A World-Class Sports Facility
If you’re looking to experience some thrilling activities or inner-city sports, you’ll want to visit WinSport. previously known as Canada Olympic Park, a legacy of the 1988 Winter Games. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a first-time visitor, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at this world-class sports facility. Hit the slopes for skiing or snowboarding in the winter, or test your skills on the mountain biking trails during the summer months.
WinSport is also home to some thrilling activities, including North America’s fastest zipline, which reaches speeds of up to 140 kilometres per hour. With breathtaking views of the park and surrounding mountains, this exhilarating experience is sure to be the highlight of your Calgary adventure. Throw in mini-golf, downhill karting, and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, and you can see why this is one of the best things to do in Calgary.
7. Stephen Avenue Walk: A Stroll Through History
Whenever we visit a city, the first thing we want to do is explore the neighbourhoods. Museums and attractions are great but it’s the city vibe that is truly unique to each place. If you’re looking for that in Calgary, it’s hard to beat the vibrant downtown scene on Stephen Avenue, a pedestrian-friendly street lined with historic buildings, shops, and restaurants. Marvel at the stunning architecture of landmarks like the Hudson’s Bay Company building and the Art Deco-style Palace Theatre. Take some time to admire public art installations, catch live performances by street musicians, or hang out at Olympic Park, which is home to many events in the summer as well as ice skating in the winter.
In addition, you’ll find lots of places to eat and shop, including some of the best restaurants in Calgary and the CORE Shopping Centre. It’s also located one block away from the 7th Avenue LRT line, making it very accessible to everyone visiting the city.
8. Prince’s Island Park: An Urban Oasis
Another thing we love to visit is urban parks. For Calgary, you can find serenity amidst the bustling cityscape at Prince’s Island Park, a picturesque retreat nestled along the Bow River. Stroll through lush greenery, relax by the tranquil lagoons, or pack a picnic and enjoy a leisurely lunch with friends and family. Be sure to check out the park’s vibrant events calendar, which includes outdoor concerts, festivals, and cultural celebrations throughout the year. On the park’s west end is also the famous Peace Bridge, a beautiful red artistic pedestrian bridge that crosses the Bow River and enables you to easily visit another one of my favourite Calgary neighbourhoods- Kensington.
9. Kensington: An Inner-City Gem
Kensington is often hailed as one of the best neighbourhoods in Calgary thanks to its unique blend of charm, culture, and convenience, making it a vibrant urban oasis. Nestled just north of the downtown core, this lively district buzzes with eclectic energy, thanks to its mix of vintage shops, indie bookstores, and artisan cafes, each offering a glimpse into the local lifestyle and creativity. Food enthusiasts can embark on a culinary journey through Kensington, sampling everything from gourmet doughnuts and specialty coffees to world-class cuisine in cozy bistros and trendy restaurants. You’ll even find one of the best candy stores in the city!
But Kensington isn’t just about the food and shopping; it’s also a cultural hub. With its close proximity to the Bow River, visitors can easily access beautiful walking and biking paths that offer stunning views of the city skyline and nature. The neighbourhood is also home to numerous festivals and outdoor markets throughout the year, bringing together community, culture, and crafts in a festive atmosphere.
Located between 10th and 14th Street, you can easily access the neighbourhood by crossing over Peace Bridge or by taking the LRT to Sunnyside Station.
10. Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre: Where Sound Comes Alive
Discover the rhythm of Canada’s music story at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre. Explore interactive exhibits, immersive soundscapes, and a vast collection of musical artifacts spanning centuries of Canadian music history. Get hands-on with state-of-the-art instruments, participate in jam sessions, and catch live performances by local and international artists.
For all fans of music, this is one of the best things to do in Calgary. Not only is it a wonderful “museum” of music, but it’s also one of the coolest pieces of architecture in the city. The building is absolutely stunning. It’s also located within walking distance of the Central Library, Stephens Avenue, and Stampede Park.
11. Calgary Farmers’ Market: A Feast for the Senses
Indulge your senses at the Calgary Farmers’ Market, a culinary haven where local producers and artisans showcase their finest goods. Wander through bustling aisles filled with farm-fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, gourmet baked goods, and handcrafted gifts. Sample mouthwatering treats from food vendors offering everything from authentic Thai cuisine to homemade gelato.
There are two locations in the city. Neither is easily accessible by public transportation. However, the West location is very close to WinSport and the South location is next to Ikea. In addition to the two Calgary Farmers’ Markets, there is also the Crossroads Market, Hillhurt Sunnyside Farmers’ Market, and Bridgeland Riverside Farmers’ Market, Not to mention pop-up markets throughout the year.
12. Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre: A Gateway to China
Located near Eau Claire Market, the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre is close to other popular attractions such as Prince’s Island Park, Peace Bridge, and Downtown Calgary. Embark on a cultural journey to the Far East at the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre, a vibrant hub celebrating Chinese heritage and traditions. Explore the stunning architecture of the iconic Cultural Centre, which features ornate pagodas, dragon motifs, and tranquil gardens. 13. Inglewood: Calgary’s Hippest Neighborhood
Experience the eclectic charm of Inglewood, Calgary’s oldest and trendiest neighbourhood. Browse quirky boutiques, art galleries, and antique shops along 9th Avenue SE, known as the “Main Street of the City.” Sample artisanal chocolates at Choklat, hunt for vintage treasures at Iron Crow, indulge in farm-to-table cuisine at trendy eateries like The Nash and Rouge, or enjoy some of the best live music in the city at the Ironwood Stage & Grill.
14. Scotiabank Saddledome: Home of the Calgary Flames
Catch the excitement of live sports and entertainment at the Scotiabank Saddledome, Calgary’s premier multipurpose arena. Cheer on the Calgary Flames as they hit the ice for thrilling NHL action, or rock out to your favourite bands at one of the many world-class concerts that come to town. With its iconic saddle-shaped roof and state-of-the-art facilities, the Saddledome is an iconic piece of architecture. However, a new arena will replace it in 2026.
Those wanting to watch a hockey game but find that the NHL games are too expensive should consider watching the also-exciting Calgary Wranglers and Calgary Hitman. In addition, you can watch the Calgary Roughnecks lacrosse team.
15. Spruce Meadows: Where Equestrian Excellence Reigns
Immerse yourself in the world of equestrian sports at Spruce Meadows, a world-renowned venue for show jumping and international competitions. Marvel at the grace and agility of elite riders as they compete against the backdrop of the majestic Rocky Mountains. Explore beautifully landscaped gardens, attend equestrian events, and enjoy family-friendly activities year-round at this premier equine facility.
Located in the deep south, you’ll likely need a car to visit. However, you can always make a road trip out of it and explore some of the truly beautiful Alberta Foothills while you’re at it.
16. Calaway Park: Fun for the Whole Family
Embark on a thrill-seeking adventure at Calaway Park, Western Canada’s largest outdoor amusement park. From fun roller coasters and water rides to family-friendly attractions and live entertainment, there’s something for thrill-seekers of all ages to enjoy. Indulge in classic carnival treats, play games, and create lasting memories with friends and family at this beloved Calgary attraction.
17. Calgary Folk Music Festival: Where Music Meets the Mountains
While there are many events during the summer in Calgary, it’s hard to beat the celebration of folk, roots, and world music at the Calgary Folk Festival, an annual summer tradition since 1980. Nestled in the heart of Prince’s Island Park, one of the most beautiful sights in downtown Calgary, this multi-day event features performances by renowned artists from around the globe. Bring a blanket, kick back on the grassy hillside, and soak up the soul-stirring melodies against the backdrop of Calgary’s skyline and the Rocky Mountains.
18. Devonian Gardens: A Tropical Paradise Downtown
Escape the urban hustle and bustle at Devonian Gardens, a lush oasis nestled in the heart of downtown Calgary. Explore winding pathways, cascading waterfalls, and vibrant botanical displays spread across 2.5 acres of indoor green space. Relax on shaded benches, enjoy a stroll, or take in panoramic views of the city skyline from the garden’s elevated walkways.
Located in the CORE Shopping Centre off Stephen Avenue, this is one of the easiest places to visit in the city.
19. Bow River Pathway: A Scenic Route Through Calgary
Discover Calgary’s natural beauty on the Bow River Pathway, a scenic trail system that winds its way through the heart of the city. Lace up your hiking boots or hop on a bike to explore roughly 1000 kilometres of paved pathways offering stunning views of the Bow River, downtown skyline, and surrounding parklands. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including deer, beavers, and a variety of bird species that call the river valley home.
As a local, this is one of the best things to do in Calgary. I highly recommend taking time to explore the pathways. If you’re not sure where to go, the most popular stretch, especially for visitors, is between Peace Bridge and Pearce Estate Park. You’ll pass by Prince’s Island Park, Eau Claire, East Village, and even Inglewood.
20. TELUS Spark Science Centre: Igniting Curiosity
If you’re looking to ignite your curiosity and explore the wonders of science, make sure you visit the TELUS Spark Science Centre, Calgary’s premier destination for hands-on learning and discovery. Engage with interactive exhibits, participate in science demonstrations, and embark on immersive adventures in the Creative Kids Museum. From exploring outer space to unlocking the mysteries of the human body, TELUS Spark offers endless opportunities for exploration and fun for visitors of all ages.
In addition to all the hands-on exhibits, they also have Calgary’s only Infinity Dome, which features planetarium shows, movies and more, all with 360-degree viewing, bright 8K projections, and comfortable seats. Even if you’re looking for a thrill, they now have RO5iE, Canada’s first robot roller-coaster. Telus Spark is located right next to the Calgary Zoo, so if you really want a jam-packed day of excitement, you can always do both!
21. Lougheed House: A Glimpse into Calgary’s Past
Step back in time and experience life in Calgary’s Victorian era at Lougheed House, a beautifully restored mansion and National Historic Site. Explore opulent interiors, lush gardens, and exhibits showcasing the history of the Lougheed family and the city of Calgary. Attend guided tours, special events, and seasonal programs that offer insight into the rich cultural heritage of this historic landmark.
22. Fort Calgary: Where History Comes Alive
Uncover the fascinating history of Calgary at Fort Calgary, a historic site that preserves the city’s founding roots. Explore interactive exhibits, artifacts, and interpretive displays that highlight the stories of Indigenous peoples, fur traders, and early settlers who shaped the region’s development. Take a guided tour of the fort, stroll through the surrounding parkland, and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of Calgary’s past.
23. Nose Hill Park: Calgary’s Natural Playground
Experience the tranquillity of nature at Nose Hill Park, one of the largest urban green spaces in the country, spanning over 11 square kilometres. Explore rolling hills, native grasslands, and panoramic viewpoints offering sweeping vistas of the city skyline and Rocky Mountains.
While you won’t find a lot of trees, it’s a great way to experience the prairie landscape that Calgary is built on and a wonderful opportunity for hiking, biking, or just walking around to enjoy the serenity of this natural oasis, home to a diverse array of flora and fauna.
24. Glenmore Reservoir: Sailing and Serenity
Ever since I learned how to sail at Glenmore Reservoir, I’ve loved this inner-city lake. Escape the city bustle and set sail on the calm waters of Glenmore Reservoir, a popular recreational destination located just minutes from downtown Calgary. Rent a sailboat, kayak, or canoe, and explore the reservoir’s scenic shoreline and tranquil bays. With stunning views of the city skyline and the Rocky Mountains as your backdrop, Glenmore Reservoir offers the perfect setting for a day of outdoor adventure and relaxation.
If you happen to visit Calgary Heritage Park, you can also experience the Glenmore Reservoir by jumping on their historical paddle-wheeler for a scenic ride.
25. Eau Claire Market: Shopping and Entertainment by the River
Indulge in shopping, dining, and entertainment at Eau Claire Market, a vibrant riverside destination in downtown Calgary. Browse eclectic boutiques, artisanal shops, and specialty stores offering everything from fashion and accessories to gourmet foods and unique gifts. Catch a movie at the Cineplex theatre, enjoy live music performances, or simply soak in the scenic views of the Bow River and Prince’s Island Park.
26. Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra: A Symphony of Sound

27. Shaw Millennium Park: Skateboarding Paradise
Grab your board and hit the ramps at Shaw Millennium Park, one of the largest outdoor skateparks in North America. Designed for skaters of all skill levels, this world-class facility features a variety of ramps, rails, and bowls for shredding and grinding. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, Shaw Millennium Park offers endless opportunities for thrills and tricks against the backdrop of Calgary’s skyline.
28. Float Down the River: A Local Favourite
Living here for more than 20 years now, my favourite thing to do in Calgary is to go floating down the Bow River on a hot summer day. Up until recently, this was very much a local activity, as you had to have your own tube or paddleboard. However, there is now a rental company that rents rafts and life jackets, enabling visitors to take part in one of the most relaxing and enjoyable summer activities.
While there are different places to start and end, most start at Shouldice Park and end near the Calgary Zoo. The float takes approximately 2-3 hours.
29. Cafes and Coffee Shops: A Taste of Calgary’s Coffee Culture
If you’re looking for a delicious high-quality cup of coffee, you’ve come to the right place. From single-origin black coffee to lattes and more, Calgary has some of the best coffee shops and cafes in the country.
